On February 3, 2018, First Lady of Liberia, Clar Weah, joined our weekly reading session with students at the JLM public school in Gbengbar’s town, Montserrado. Madam Weah commended KEEP for the work it is doing with the Liberian children and urged us to organize more programs that will help improve the reading skills of children across the country.
Madam Weah read two books during the 2 hour reading session– “Greedy Zebra and Anansi” and “The Pot of Beans” – to over 40 who attentively listened, asked questions and learned new words.
Mrs. Weah said she is thankful for what the organizers are doing for the children and called on other organizations to introduce more reading programs that will improve the educational system for future generations.
She informed the the KEEP team present that this was her first official activity as First lady and will always remember KEEP and support where she can. Mrs. Weah said “I feel proud to read to kids on my first visit as first lady, and seeing what Brenda is doing for the kids, I am very impressed.”
Earlier in January, we also had two other high profile personalities who joined our reading promotion campaign, Nobel Peace Laureate Madama Leymah Gbowee and British Ambassador to Liberia, Ambassador David Belgrove.
Both visiting guests donated several books to the Reading Room collection.
